Road trip to Goderich, home to a tornado in 2011 and the world's largest salt mine. Tuesday, September 10th. 9:15 a.m.-1 p.m.

To date, 150 million tons of salt have been produced from the largest underground salt mine in the world. You’re probably envisioning this salt mine in a far off city or country and not in the coastal town of Goderich. The salt you use to flavor your homemade dishes likely hails from Goderich, the destination of today’s trip. After learning about the salt mine, we visit the Goderich Gaol (Jail). The Gaol was built in 1839 and closed in 1972 and was also the site of Canada’s last public hanging. Nicolas Melady Jr. was hanged there in 1869 for the murder of his father and step-mother. There was also the infamous case of 14-year old Steven Truscott, who was sentenced to be hanged for murder. Fifty years later, he was found to have been wrongly convicted. We will finish our trip at the farmer’s market in the downtown square for some local goodies.
